Chapter 18
“Where are you off to this morning so bright and early?” Rodney said as he walked around the front of his dark blue pickup to where Candy was holding the door to her SUV open. He was wearing worn blue jeans, a cowboy hat, and a western shirt. She always knew when he was heading out across the property to work with the ranch hands—and she also knew that the fact that he and Becky spent hours apart every day helped in the strong, loving relationship they had.
Rodney wasn’t a man who told his wife what to do or how to think, though, and Candy was pretty sure he didn’t pick out or buy her clothes for her. Why was Neil so controlling?
“I’m going into town,” she said, “to the orphanage.” She couldn’t believe she’d said it, but she realized maybe she wanted his reaction, too.
He appeared confused but didn’t look away. It was as if he was waiting for her to continue.
“There’s a little girl there, very young, four or five. We’ve just learned she’s deaf. No one knew, and she never got the help she needed. I’m going in to take her to the doctor and help her.”
“Does Neil know?” Rodney asked. She wasn’t sure whether that was approval she was hearing in his tone or whether he was of the same mind as Neil.
“I told him last night,” she said, though she hadn’t told him all the details about how she was planning on getting up first thing this morning to take Cat to see Jim Miller.
“That’s a lot to take on, Candy. A child with any kind of special needs is a fulltime commitment.”
“I know that, but what kind of person do you think it would make me to simply walk away from her when no one else will help her? I wouldn’t be able to look myself in the mirror. Neil doesn’t want me helping her, either.”
“He may be concerned about you taking on too much. How will you find the time when you have a new baby to look after?” he said, sounding just like Neil.
“There’s no baby yet,” she said a little sharply.
Rodney cocked his head to the side, really taking her in. “We’ve noticed the tension between you and my son, of course. Neil can be rather strong willed. I guess all of us Friessen men are. We soften with age, though, realizing as time passes what’s really important.”
He was resting his arm and leaning on the hood of her SUV. She took in his dusty, worn cowboy boots and had to smile, as she couldn’t imagine Neil wearing something that old and rustic.
“Did you ever try to arrange Becky, to tell her what to do and expect her to just do it, never stopping to include her?” she asked. She wondered by the odd look he gave her, was he thinking back on something he’d done or trying to figure out whether this was about her and Neil?
“My son is young, but he’s smart as all hell, the only one of us to get his MBA,” Rodney said.
